6 things to do this Easter weekend

Dust off your gardening gloves and wipe down your tools, the UK and Ireland’s gardening season has officially begun!
This weekend is a double-whammy, with Easter Sunday and the clock’s going forward both taking place on the same day (March 27).
So what will we do with this sudden increase in daylight hours, apart from eating more chocolate?
Here are 6 great ways to welcome the start of Spring and your best ever year in the garden!:

1. Cut your lawn

If you haven’t done so already, it’s now time to start cutting your lawn. The warm wet winter has no doubt taken its toll on delicate grass plants, so why not give it a quick boost at the same time? Aftercut Lawn Thickener contains both lawn feed and seed and can be used directly after mowing to thicken and condition your existing lawn.

2. Spring clean paving and decking

Reclaim your decking and patios from the elements by giving them a deep-clean. Save your back and knees by using our Hero Paving and Decking Cleaner. This no scrub formula blitzes green algae and mould, giving up to nine months lasting protection.

3. Start a fruit and veg patch

Grab a sketch book and plan out a fruit and veg patch for your garden. A great way to start is by making a list of all the fruit and veg that you and your family enjoy. Prioritise things that are expensive to buy (goji berries, strawberries, raspberries) or taste much better home grown (tomatoes, potatoes, herbs). Read our guide to starting your own veg patch to find out more.

4. Tackle weeds

Weeds love spring as much as we do and will now start to grow vigorously again. The best way to control them is to tackle them early with a fast-acting weedkiller such as Resolva 24H.

5. Get children involved

Create a miniature garden, grow some seeds or grow a plant from an avocado stone. The Children’s Garden: Loads of Things to Grow and Make by Matthew Appleby is a great place to start. Likewise, look at our Unwins Little Growers range of seeds, which are specially designed to appeal to children.

6. Visit your local garden retailer

We’re bound to have at least one day this weekend with less than perfect weather. Take advantage of a grey day by visiting one of your local garden retailers to pick up some garden essentials, grab a coffee and get some inspiration.
