Seasonal Tips for Feb & Mar - Fruit

For the tastiest produce in the garden grow your own fruit, it’s not as difficult as you may think.
- Finish planting any bare root fruit canes, bushes and trees before they start to sprout into growth. Make sure you incorporate plenty of quality compost into the planting hole. For the best results choose organic Vegetable Growing Compost or Earth Matters Peat Free Multi Purpose Compost.
- Check on any newly planted fruit plants especially if there has been a hard frost, as the soil may have lifted or moved around the roots and may need firming in again.
- Prune Autumn fruiting raspberries back to the ground and feed with Sulphate of Potash Fruit and Flower Food.
- Feed fruit trees with Sulphate of Potash Fruit and Flower Food to encourage good quality crops in the season ahead. Potash is important for fruit development.
- Mulch established fruit trees and bushes and canes with Bed & Border Chipped Bark. Make sure the soil is saturated before applying a generous layer of mulch.
- Established crowns of rhubarb can be forced into early growth by covering with a rhubarb forcer.
- For an early crop of strawberries, cover established plants now with cloches and protect the plants from slugs using Slug Buster.
