Planting bulbs in the border/garden soil

Most garden bulbs should be planted as soon as they are bought. If you are unable to plant them straight away then remove them from any plastic packaging and store in a cool, dry and dark place. Plant as soon as possible.

Step 1

Decide where you want to plant your bulbs. Check the packaging for details of the best aspect for the variety you have chosen. For the best effect in garden borders plant them in large clumps for dramatic results. Dig out a hole in the garden soil that is deep enough to cover the bulb with twice its height in compost. Loosen the soil in the base of the hole and mix in Bulb Planting Compost.

Step 2

Check the packet for instructions for different sorts of bulbs. Position the bulbs with the nose pointing up and the flatter side down onto the bed of Bulb Planting Compost. Leave about 10cm (4in) between each bulb so that they do not touch.

Step 3

Cover over the bulbs with more Bulb Planting Compost and firm down evenly. Cover over the top with garden soil and mark the spot with a plant label. The bulbs will start to emerge in early spring.
