Seasonal Tips - Veg - Peas and Beans
If the soil is not waterlogged or frozen you can start to sown some hardy vegetable seed such as broad beans and peas outdoors.
- Good varieties to try are Unwins Broad Bean ‘Bunyard’s Exhibition’, Broad Bean ‘Masterpiece Green Long Pod’, Broad Bean ‘Jubilee Hysor’, Broad Bean ‘Red Epicure’, Broad Bean ‘Meteor’ and Broad Bean ‘Optica’ and Unwins Pea ‘Early Onwards’ and Pea ‘Meteor’.
- Prepare the soil first by digging it over to aerate the root zone. If your soil is claggy and not very crumbly then line your seed drills with Westland John Innes Seed Sowing Compost with Sure Start.
- Sow the seed evenly into the seed drills and cover over with more compost.
- Protect the sowings from wildlife with cloches or fleece. You can also sow these seeds into pots, trays or root trainers in a cool greenhouse until they are large enough to plant out.
