Seasonal Tips - Veg - Salads and Greens

Outdoors, if the soil is crumbly, beginning to warm and not stodgy, sow summer cabbages, celery, lettuce and Brussels sprouts, under cloches.

  • Make a shallow trench in the soil about 1inch (2.5cm) deep, line the base with Multi-Purpose Compost with added John Innes, water gently and then sprinkle the seed thinly on top.
  • Cover over with more compost. Good varieties to choose include Unwins Lettuce ‘Cut and Come Again’ (Organic), Parsley ‘Champion Moss Curled’, Spinach ‘Medania’, Parsley ‘Italian Plain Leaved’, Chives ‘Fine Leaved’, Mustard ‘Fine White’ and the new Brussels Sprout ‘Bitesize’, New Celery ‘Latham Self Blanching Galaxy’ and New Mustard ‘Ruby’s & Gold’.
  • Protect young seedlings from slug damage by using Slug Buster a new and effective way to control slugs in wet weather, or use the organic option of Slug Blocker to ptotect plants and seed trays from slugs. Always read the label.  Use pesticides safely.
