Play Areas
Creating the perfect surface for a child’s play area is essential for their safety. Westland Play Bark is a specially selected grade of carefully screened large bark chips. It’s been filtered to remove any dust and small particles making it a safe and clean choice for playgrounds large and small.
The medium sized chips (approximately 20-30mm in size) provide an impact-absorbing layer under swings, slides and climbing frames. It is also more tolerant to wear and helps suppress weed growth wherever it is used. When applied at a depth of 30cm (12in) it will provide protection from falls from a maximum height of 3metres. It is important that you check the play area daily prior to use and make sure that there is a minimum even coverage of 20cm (8in) over the whole area, or 30cm (12in) where needed. Top up with bark if necessary.
Remove any debris and foreign matter that may have appeared in the bark. Remember that Westland Play Bark will only provide protection as an impact-absorbing surface. Play Bark chips can be abrasive and particularly in dry conditions, can cause scratches. It is recommended that if the bark becomes very dry that it is watered to reduce the risk of scratches.
For children’s sand pits use Play Sand, it’s recommended for use in children’s play areas and is specially washed and graded for safe, clean fun. Make sure you have a secure fitting lid over the sand pit so that you can close it away when the children have finished playing. This will keep out the rain and stop visiting cats from using the sand as a litter tray.
