Diseases

Some plants can be susceptible to certain diseases which left untreated can cause great damage or even death. Many of these can either be avoided with a little care and good growing practices or treated effectively if contracted.

It is important to burn any plant material affected by disease and do not place in compost bins as this can help spread to other parts of the garden.

Damping off

A fungal problem, it’s a common problem with young seedlings, especially early in the season and is often associated with poor growing conditions. It is essential to use clean pots and trays for each new batch of seedlings and to buy fresh, top quality seed compost to get the very best from your seeds. Dirty pots and old compost can introduce disease problems to your plants. Choose Westland John Innes Seed Sowing Compost. This is a well-drained compost that provides exactly the right growing conditions for your seeds In future try sowing fewer seeds to the pot and spread them out so that there is good airflow between the developing seedlings. Improve the ventilation in your greenhouse and keep the compost moist but not wet. Avoid it drying out as this can also cause seedling collapse.

Rust

Caused by a fungi, rust is characterized by small patches of spores on the under side of leaves. Spores are often spread by rain splashing onto leaves or in the air.

Remove affected areas and increase ventilation. This can be done by pruning out over crowded areas of shrubs etc. Affected plants should be sprayed using Plant Rescue Fungus Killer Ready to Use. This ready to use formulation is ideal for dealing with fungal diseases fast and efficiently and is then as a protective measure to prevent the disease reoccurring.

Powdery Mildew

A white powdery fungal growth which appears on the leaves of affected plants. Spores are generally spread by wind and rain. Water susceptible plants regularly as powdery mildew often occurs on plants grown in dry soil.

Remove affected areas and spray with Plant Rescue Fungus Killer Ready to Use.

Black spot

Dark spots or patches on leaves appear. Black spot can be spread by insects, wind or rain and it is therefore important to remove and burn all leaves affected.

Avoid wetting the foliage if possible and spray with Plant Rescue Fungus Killer Ready to Use.

Always read the labels and use pesticides safely.
