There’s something very exciting about early spring in the garden. It’s as if nature has turned a corner, come out of hibernation and is starting to come alive. As the weather starts to warm, many early flowering beauties are enticed to bloom lifting the gloom of winter and heralding the start of spring.
February can be a mild month and bring an early spring, or it may remain very cold slowing the appearance of early spring bulbs. Your garden activities will be very much dictated by the temperature. As the soil starts to warm outside weed seeds will start to germinate, this is nature’s signal to gardeners that spring is starting, the soil is warm enough to start growing seeds outside and it’s time to go gardening. Even so, the odd cold snap can still have us reaching for the fleece to protect early sowings. Always make sure you have a contingency plan, never sow the whole packet of seed in one sowing just in case the weather takes a downturn and you have a crop failure. With more seeds in the packet you’ve always got a second or third chance for success.
Once spring is in full throttle it can overtake everything, when the weather is right there is so much to achieve and create that there barely seems time to keep up. Go for it, the more you do now the more amazing your garden will look in just a few short months. And don’t forget the garden health team at Westland and Unwins are right behind you. If you need some expert advice or have a gardening dilemma to deal with, get in touch via the garden doctor and the team will do their best to find the right solution to your problem.
