How to Plant up Pots of Summer Flowering Bulbs

Make the most of summer flowering bulbs. These are a great choice for garden containers and can be used to create wonderful displays all summer long.

You can use summer flowering bulbs to add more colour and drama to existing containers by planting them in among other plants and flowers, or you can create brand new displays using one or more types of bulbs. For a striking effect consider planting a whole container with just one variety of bulb, or use two or three contrasting bulbs for a great display.

Always ensure that the container you choose has good drainage. Improve the drainage by adding a layer of crocks (broken terracotta flower pots) to the base of the planter.

Add a layer of fresh West+ All Purpose Compost & 4 Month Feed. This is great for container plants because it really holds the moisture in the compost and contains a generous amount of fertiliser.

Step 1 step image

Carefully position the bulbs on the surface of the compost layer. If it is a deep container you could plant two layers of bulbs. Otherwise simply plant a single layer and ensure that the bulbs do not touch. As a general rule bulbs should be planted at about twice their depth so that there is an equivalent amount of compost above them. Always plant them with the growing tip uppermost and the roots at the base.

Cover over with a fresh layer of compost and fill the container until there is about 2cm (1inch) just below the rim, this makes it easier to water.

Keep the container well watered, but not sodden and when the plants start to establish keep them well fed with Nutri All Purpose Plant Food.
