If your soil pH is less than 6.0, an application of Garden Lime will improve nutrient uptake particularly phosphorous, strengthening plant roots and stems. Lime is an important source of calcium for plants and ensures strong growth and fruit and leaf quality. Garden Lime also contains high levels of magnesium, which assists disease resistance producing rich, healthy leaves. It also breaks down heavy clay soils improving structure and quality. Westland Garden Lime is a granular product that breaks down rapidly to give fine neutralising particles, providing immediate improvement to your plants and soil through increased nutrient availability.

I've been told that I need to lime my cabbage patch. What is the reason for this and what should I use?
Most vegetables prefer to grow in soil that is either neutral or very slightly acidic. Cabbages however, prefer an alkaline soil and this also protects them from a disorder that affects many brassicas, called clubroot. To increase the pH of the soil (make it more alkaline) you can add Garden Lime. It is also not a good idea to apply lime and manure at the same time, as a reaction between the two can release nitrogen from the soil. Follow the instructions on the pack for the best results.
