How do I use it?
For use on existing beds & borders, always prepare the area first by removing all weeds and debris. Bed & Border Chipped Bark
Q We’ve just moved onto a new housing estate and are designed the front garden. We want to plant mostly shrubs that will look good all year round, what else can we do to keep this area low maintenance?
A If you are planting a new border from scratch there is a lot you can do now to reduce your workload in future. Often the topsoil on a new build garden is very shallow so it is important to improve the soil and build it up. Be sure not to raise the level above the damp proof course if the border is adjacent to the walls of your house. Dig in plenty of Farmyard Manure or Organic Garden Compost to enrich the soil in the whole border before you start plant. By feeding the soil you are investing in the long-term health of your plants.
When planting your shrubs incorporate lots of Rose, Tree & Shrub Compost with added John Innes. Make sure you dig this into the surrounding soil too to give the roots some fresh, rich compost to grow into.
Lay a tough planting membrane over the whole border and plant your shrubs through it. Cut large cross shaped openings into the fabric so that you can dig out a good sized planting hole and then when you have planted the root ball and infilled with plenty of Rose, Tree & Shrub Compost with added John Innes, you can fold back the corners around the stem of the shrub. Now mulch the whole area with a generous layer of Westland Bed & Border Chipped Bark; 5cm (2in) is ideal. This will give a neat finish to the border and help set off your shrubs to their best advantage. It’s a great choice for garden borders and the larger chips last longer and look great with bigger plants such as shrubs. The planting membrane will stop perennial weeds from growing throughout the border and will create a layer between the mulch and the soil that will conserve soil moisture and slow the break down of the bark so it will look good for longer. It’s important to make sure that newly planted shrubs are properly watered until they are established which can take up to 2 years.
