How can I improve the drainage around some houseleeks that I've planted in pots?
 
Sempervivums like many alpines hate to be too wet and need very good drainage. Your best bet is to remove about 1 - 1.5cm depth of soil or compost from the top of the pots and replace this with Horticultural Grit. This layer will divert the water from around the plants into the compost below and keep the base of the leaves dry. It gives an attractive finish too and will ensure that your plants look good all year round.
 
I want to create a more natural effect in my aquarium. Can I safely use Horticultural Grit in the tank with my gold fish?
 
Yes you can. Simply wash the Horticultural Grit several times to ensure that it is free from any dust particles and use it as a base layer in the bottom of your tank. It is an ideal medium for aquatic plants to root into and will create a subtle, natural look to the whole tank.
