This specially formulated compost, made from the traditional John Innes recipe of sterilised loam, peat, horticultural grit with added nutrients provides the perfect medium for young plant growth. John Innes No.1 is designed for young seedlings and plants which need a low but balanced nutrient supply for plant growth without damaging delicate roots. The peat content facilitates air movement and water retention reducing the need for frequent watering and is easier to rewet when dry.

Uses: Specially designed for potting on seedlings, cuttings and all other young plants.

feeding: The compost is supplied with enough nutrients to meet plant requirements for the first 3-4 weeks. Thereafter, for best results commence feeding with Westland Feed-all Plant Food.

Nutrient Content & pH: The compost contains a balanced fertiliser complete with trace elements and has a pH of 6.0-7.0.

  • Q: I’ve grown my seeds in John Innes Seed Compost, now I want to prick them out, what should I use?
  • A:  The John Innes Composts vary according to the level of nutrients in each one. For young seedlings you need a low but balanced nutrient strength, which will not damage sensitive seedling roots. For young plants and seedlings, choose Westland John Innes No 1. This avoids root scorch, but provides a steady balanced feed for the plants, vital for healthy development.
