Vine Weevil

Vine Weevil is a voracious garden pest. Although the adults do eat parts of the leaves of many garden plants it is the action of the vine weevil larvae that do the most damage.

The eggs are laid beneath the soil surface by the adult weevil and the larvae hatch out and devour the roots of the plants. They are often a problem in patio containers where susceptible plants such as Busy Lizzies, Primulas, Fuchsias and Begonias are frequently found. Control is tricky as these pests are now widespread in gardens nationwide. The use of fresh compost in containers each season is essential to avoid overwintering populations from attacking newly planted plants.

• Buy plants from reputable sources and always check the root balls when planting.
• Look out for creamy white crescent shaped grubs with a brown head and remove these from the compost.
• Use a heavy compost in containers such as Westland John Innes No. 3 Mature Plant Compost or Westland Multi-Purpose Compost with added John Innes as these are less likely to be infested with Vine weevil eggs.
