How to Protect Veg Plants from Pests
Just when your garden produce is almost ready to eat, something else finds it first and feasts on your hard work before you get a chance for harvest. Don’t waste a morsel of home grown food. Keep it safe from pests and problems with a little help from your friends at Garden Health.
The first step in protecting your produce from pests is to ensure that your plants are strong and healthy. A well-grown plant withstands the ravages of pests better than an ailing one. Keep the soil well fed and well drained by incorporating plenty of organic matter before planting such as Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure and feed your plants with a quality and dedicated plant food to keep them at their peak all of the time.
Many pests that affect our plants are transitory problems moving around the garden at will. Before you reach for the pest spray, consider whether you could protect your plants with a mesh, a barrier or a trap. These more mechanical methods offer today’s savvy gardener with an integrated approach that keeps edible plants free from residues and helps support a wildlife friendly garden. Use a fine mesh over brassicas and carrots to keep out cabbage white butterflies, carrot fly and many other flying pests. Don’t use mesh over plants that need access to pollinating insects, or your plants will fail to set fruit.
Remember to use slug barriers around susceptible plants to protect against slugs and snails, or trap them in beer traps. See our guide on How to Protect Your Plants from Slugs for more great tips.
Before using a pesticide, always identify the problem accurately and then choose the right product for the right plant. For an instant knock down effect that works on contact with the pest choose a contact insecticide. They don’t linger as long and deal with the problem that’s present rather than a blanket approach. Plant Rescue Bug Killer Fruit and Vegetable RTU, which contains a pyrethroid insecticide that works on contact with a broad range of sap sucking insects. Check the label to ensure it can be used on your plants before use and observe any harvest intervals.
