How to care for your lawn

To keep your lawn in tip-top condition, it is important to care for your lawn and to give it some TLC. Grass are little plants, if you keep them healthy the lawn will take care of itself. Our helpful guide gives you advice on why, when and how to feed your lawn.

Why feeding your lawn is important

For a stronger, healthier lawn it is important to feed your grass. Feeding your lawn regularly will help to create and maintain a stronger, greener and fuller looking lawn.

There are many benefits for creating a thicker lawn. Firstly, having a full and thick lawn helps the grass to out-compete moss and clover, as there will be less space for the moss to grow. It will also save you time and will prevent you from having the need to scarify and rake a tired mossy lawn which can be a hard-working and time-consuming job.

Secondly, feeding your lawn helps to create a thicker root system which means your lawn is more drought tolerant. Plus your lawn will be ready for garden parties and BBQs in the sun!

When to feed your lawn

It is recommended that you need to feed your lawn once a month with a balanced lawn feed rather than once a year with a high nutrient level lawn feed. This encourages consistent growth of your lawn rather than one big spurt of lush, vigorous growth.

Feed your lawn during the growing season between mid-March until end October, when the weather is warmer and when soil temperatures are not in freezing conditions.

How to feed your lawn

We recommend feeding your lawn using Westland SafeLawn once every Month throughout the growing season to keep your lawn strong and healthy. SafeLawn is a safe and easy product to use and is great for those with families and pets!

Over the growing season, your grass can grow at a rate of 2/3cm per week, meaning that you have to mow your lawn a lot over the season. Mowing your lawn a lot during such a short time period means that your soil runs out of nutrients quickly, as all its energy is used up during the growth spurt of the grass. It’s best to schedule your lawn feeding with SafeLawn right after mowing. It’s a great idea to remove the grass clippings before feeding for better seed-soil and feed contact.
