It’s not rocket science, as they say, to know that a weed is a bad thing in the garden. It’s highly likely to be ugly, and it’s definitely growing in the wrong place. But in addition to these two things a weed causes us a bunch of other problems.
You see, a weed competes with its neighbouring, cultivated plants in several ways – it competes for moisture and nutrients from the soil, and also space and light above-ground.
A sizeable clump of weeds, depending on the type, can choke border plants and cause their demise. Weeds in a veg plot can strangle a row of onions, or smother a row of broad beans. The only place in a garden where weeds are welcome is a wildlife patch.
