Alderman grows to around 150cm (5ft), so it requires support similar to that for runner beans. The little extra effort is well worth it, when you start picking a bumper crop of really tasty peas. It is also a variety widely grown by exhibitors because of the quality of its pods.

Sowing Outdoors
- Make a flat bottomed drill 15cm (6in) wide and water it well
- Sow about ten seeds per 30cm (12in), spacing them evenly in a zigzag manner
- Cover it with about 2cm (1in) of soil, and firm it down with the flat edge of a rake
- Allow about 60cm (24in) between rows
Support
- As the peas start to grow, support them with canes and netting or a similar structure to that used for runner beans
- The plants will reach a height of up to 150cm (5ft)
Aftercare
- Keep well watered, especially in dry spells
Growing Tips
- As seedlings emerge, the shoots are very attractive to birds, placing a few little twigs over the row will give some protection
