Add colour and style to salads with these delicious red cabbage shoots. As easy to grow as cress, they can be harvested just five to ten days after sowing, when the seedlings are about 2cm (1in) long. They have a subtle flavour and crisp texture, and their high vitamin content makes them a great choice at any time of year.

Sowing Indoors

  • Unwins Sprouting Seeds can be grown successfully on any warm, light windowsill which is not in full sun all day
  • Place 2 layers of absorbent growing medium, like kitchen roll, into a shallow dish or tray
  • These should be thoroughly wet, but drained of excess water
  • Sow the seed fairly thickly over the wet growing medium
  • Place the dish in a warm, light airy position
  • Maintain a temperature of around 15°C (60°F)
  • Keep the sowing moist but not saturated to ensure rapid germination
  • Depending on the exact growing conditions, the young seedlings should be ready for harvest using a pair of scissors 5-10 days after sowing

Harvest

  • Harvest the shoots when they are about 2cm (1cm) long, just as the green leaves begin to appear
  • Rinse the shoots and use immediately in salads, sandwiches or stir fry dishes

Growing Tips

  • Sprouting Seeds contain more nutrients then their adult counterparts
  • Sow regularly for continuous, healthy and quick harvests
