I want to mix up my own compost for my alpine plants. The recipe I have states I need to use sand, but what sort of sand should I use?
Use Horticultural Sand as it is specially washed and graded and will mix easily with compost to improve the drainage, and introduce a coarser element to the mix. Don't be tempted to use builder's sand as it is unsuitable for growing plants.
I want to grow some trees from seed, and have been told that some, like Yew and Hawthorn need stratifying, what does this mean and how do I do it?
Many tree seeds need to be subjected to a cold period to break their dormancy, this is called stratification. Yew and Hawthorn have very hard seed coats and actually need to be stratified over two winters to allow the seed coat to break down naturally. It’s very easy to do, simply mix the seed with moist Horticultural Sand and peat, in a ratio of 1:1, place this in a small tin, with drainage holes and place in a cold spot for about 18 months, so that it is outside for two winters. Sow the seeds in a quality loam based (soil based) seed compost in spring.
