Perlite

Perlite is an ideal compost additive as it helps to retain air in the compost which is essential for healthy root development. It helps to create an optimum balance of air and water, which makes water logging almost impossible and minimises damage to roots when transplanting. When added to compost it accelerates rooting and reduces the risk of fungal diseases. Perlite is a naturally occurring, non-toxic, volcanic rock that has been heated to a high temperature to produce a lightweight, micro-porous material with a high surface area. It has been carefully graded to produce a particle size of 2-5mm.

Uses:
It is ideal for use when sowing seeds, rooting cuttings, potting on and container growing.

Feeding:
When used for root cuttings plants should be fed as soon as roots develop. When potting on once the container/trough is fully planted water well and feed as appropriate.

For best results use at recommended rates.

How can I ensure that the compost that I use drains freely?
 
You can improve the drainage and aeration of compost by mixing in some Perlite when you plant. Perlite is a lightweight, inert volcanic rock that will remain in the compost, opening up the structure and allowing air and water to percolate freely. It stops compost from compacting.
 
I often find my seed compost gets too wet, what can I do to solve this problem?
 
Overwatering is one of the biggest killers of seedlings. You need to ensure that the compost remains damp, but not wet to ensure healthy germination.
