The Importance of Digging

Digging is important as it breaks up the soil, making it light enough for plants and flowers to grow in.If roots cannot push their way through the soil easily, any plant will be stunted and find it difficult to thrive.Thererefore, digging is important and there are a variety of ways that you can break down the soil in your garden, some easier than others. This is best done between October and December when the ground is dry and frost-free.

Single digging

Start by digging trenches in your garden and work your way down the trench with a spade. Break up the ground as you go. At this point, you could also dig in Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure or compost to improve the soil.

Double digging

Do the same as single digging, by digging trenches. But do it twice to ensure a really light and crumbly texture. This is very hard work, but the results will be worth it! Additionally dig in Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure or compost as you go to improve the soil also.

No-dig digging

An easier, approach, but still an effective one. This is especially good for those with back problems.

Spread Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure or compost onto the top of the soil so it creates a thin layer, no more than a few inches. Then simply sit back and let the worms do the digging for you. Over time they will incorporate this into the soil, thus improving the overall quality.
