Ingredients (serves 6)
Filling:
- 850g of cooking apples (peeled, cored & sliced)
- Cinnamon
- 3 tbsp golden caster sugar
Crumble:
- 260g plain flour
- 165g golden caster sugar
- 165g cold butter
- Topping
- Handful of rolled oats
- 2 tbsp of brown sugar
Method:
- Preheat oven to 190/170 fan/gas mark 5
- Chop the apples up into small pieces but chop a third into larger chunks to give the filling more texture
- Cover in golden caster sugar, sprinkle loads of cinnamon to taste and mix well
- Flatten down to stop the crumble mixture from seeping through too much while cooking
- Put to one side and prepare your crumble
- Rub the cold butter (straight from fridge is best) with your plain flour and a pinch of salt between your fingers until it looks like breadcrumbs
- Pour over the mixture and then even out across the top
- Pull a fork across lightly, then cover with oats and brown sugar, pop in the oven for about 45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apples feel cooked. Leave to cool before serving with vanilla ice cream, custard or cream
