Lawn Spreader Settings

To protect your lawn, always start with the recommended setting and avoid over‑application. For the most accurate results, calibrate your spreader before first use and at the start of each new season.

Care should be taken when using rotary spreaders to ensure the product is applied only to the lawn and not to non‑target areas such as beds, borders, or hard surfaces. If any product lands on a hard surface, brush it off immediately and return it to the lawn to prevent staining and runoff. And as always, follow the instructions on your product packaging. This will give you the most up‑to‑date guidance for safe and effective use.

While we test a selection of popular competitor spreaders with our Westland products, we do not test competitor products using Westland spreaders. If you are using another brand’s spreader or product, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for their recommended settings and calibration guidance, or contact their customer support team for tailored advice. This ensures you get the most reliable and accurate results for your specific equipment.

Westland Hand Spreader:

For best results, always check your product packaging for the correct application rate. Avoid exceeding the recommended amount, as using too much can damage your lawn.

How to Use

  • Measure your lawn area
Work out the size of the space you’re treating so you know exactly how much product you need.
  • Weigh out the right amount
Measure the correct quantity of product based on the area you’re covering. This helps ensure even feeding and avoids patchy results.
  • Set the spreader to “0” before filling
Place the spreader on a flat, hard surface (such as a path or patio). Never fill it while standing on the lawn. Then pour the product into the hopper.
  • Choose the appropriate setting
Adjust the dial to the recommended setting shown on your pack.
  • Start spreading
Walk at a comfortable, steady pace while turning the handle continuously. The amount applied can vary depending on your walking speed and how quickly you turn the handle continuously. The amount applied can vary depending on:
  • Your walking speed
  • How quickly you turn the handle

If you need more even coverage, simply overlap your passes more frequently.

How to Work Out Your Lawn Spreader Settings (Calibration Guide)

If your spreader isn’t listed in our guide, don’t worry, you can easily work out the correct setting at home. Calibration helps ensure you apply the right amount of product and avoid patchy or uneven results.

Here’s the simplest way to do it:

Measure the area you want to treat – Work out the size of your lawn in square metres (m²) so you know exactly how much product you should be using.

Weigh out the right amount of product – Check the application rate on your product packaging, then weigh out the amount needed for the area you’ve just measured.

  • Do a small test run – To avoid accidental damage to your lawn while testing, spread just one square metre onto a large plastic sheet or piece of tarpaulin.
  • Set your spreader to a low or mid setting.
  • Walk at a steady pace to apply the product.

Collect and weigh the product – Sweep the granules off the plastic sheet using an old dustpan and brush, and weigh them again (avoid using household kitchen scales or containers, as products like iron sulphate can stain).

Adjust and repeat if needed – If you applied too much, lower the setting. If you applied too little, increase the setting. Repeat the test until the amount dispensed matches the recommended rate on the packaging.

If you notice over‑application while treating your lawn, stop immediately and turn the setting down; don’t continue across the whole lawn.
