Caring for Your Sunflower Seed
- When you get home, place your pot in a sunny spot and water well, a windowsill is ideal!
- Once a shoot appears, this can take anywhere between 3 days and 2 weeks, continue to water your seedling regularly and keep in the warm, sunny spot until your seedling is a few inches tall.
- You can now plant your sunflower outside!
- Choose a sunny spot, dig a small hole just big enough for your little pot and plant the whole thing. Don’t worry, your fibre pot will break down naturally into your soil.
- Water your sunflower well. You can add a support now if you like, or in a few weeks, just gently push a cane into the soil next to your sunflower and very gently tie the sunflower to it.
- Remember to feed your sunflower as it grows, we recommend using Westland Boost All Purpose Plant Feed to give it all the nutrients it needs!
Caring for Your Beetroot Seed
- When you get home, water your pot well!
- You can plant the entire pot outside straight away.
- Dig a small hole in a sunny spot and add a handful of Westland Farmyard Manure or Westland Soil Improver to give the soil some extra nutrients.
- Place your entire fibre pot into the hole and backfill any gaps with some compost.
- Water well again and add a plant label so you know what you’ve planted.
- Ensure to water your beetroot plant regularly, making sure it doesn’t dry out during warm spells.
- Remember to feed your beetroot as it grows, we recommend using Westland Big Tom!
- You can harvest your beetroot once the leaves have grown to between 30cm and 60cm tall. This should give you a good sized beetroot which can be eaten raw, or cooked. You can even eat the leaves!
Caring for Your Basil Seeds
- When you get home, place your pot in a sunny spot and water well, a windowsill is ideal!
- You can cover the pot in cling film to help the seeds germinate.
- Once the seeds germinate, remove the cling film and start to water regularly, taking care not to overwater.
- You can start to harvest once your plant has grown plenty of leaves. To encourage bushier growth, only take the top leaves off the plant.
- Basil will start to flower from mid-to-late summer, you can delay this by removing any flower stems that appear.
- You can give your basil plant a boost of extra nutrients with a balanced feed such as Westland Boost All Purpose Plant Feed!
Caring for Your Polka Dot Houseplant Seeds
- When you get home, give your seeds a light watering and cover with cling film to increase humidity and help germination.
- Germination can take up to 2 weeks, so keep somewhere warm during this time.
- Once your seedlings have germinated, remove the cling film and water regularly, keeping the compost damp but not waterlogged.
- This houseplant prefers moist soil in a warm spot, and the colour of the leaves will be more vibrant if kept in indirect sunlight.
- Pinch out the top two leaves to encourage bushier growth once your plant has grown an at least 3 sets of leaves. You can do this by simply pinching off the top leaves with your thumb and index finger above the second leaf set.
- You can repot your houseplant once it has outgrown the fibre pot. Use Westland Houseplant Potting Mix and a pot a size bigger than your fibre pot.
- As your houseplant grows, use Westland Houseplant Feed for healthier growth.
