Seeds need three essentials to germinate successfully heat, water and air. If any of these are missing germination will be poor. Our seed and cutting compost is guaranteed to help you give every seed and cutting the best start so you can enjoy propagating success.

Before you begin, rework compost between hands to allow it to regain intended texture.

Seed Sowing

  • Fill pot or tray to just below the rim.
  • Tap down to give a flat even surface, water thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Sow seeds evenly, cover with a thin layer of compost.
  • Water using a watering can with a fine rose.
  • Cover with a polythene bag or propagator and keep out of direct sunlight until the seeds have germinated.

Pricking Out

  • When the seedlings are large enough to handle, remove them from the seed tray and pot on in fresh Westland compost.
  • Always pick up seedlings by their leaves, not stems, to avoid damage.

Cuttings

  • Cut and remove non flowering 10cm shoot.
  • Trim to leave top two pairs of leaves.
  • Dip in rooting gel.
  • Insert firmly into compost, water and place in poly bag, in warm spot away from direct sunlight.

General Advice

  • Use in a well ventilated place and avoid breathing in dust.
  • Always wear gloves when gardening and wash hands after use.
  • Not suitable for ericaceous plants.
