How to pot and re-pot?

Repot any time of the year; spring is an ideal time during the growing season.

  1. Select a young bonsai and pot it up using Westland Bonsai Potting Mix using a small pot. For the next 2-3 years regularly trim the roots and shoots.
  2. When the bonsai tree is ready to be re-potted, get an adequate size pot and trim the roots so they fit into the container without having to be bent or forced.
  3. Fill the container with potting mix and secure the tree into the pot with wire. Keep the plant out of the sun and water frequently to allow it to recover.
  4. Every spring take your bonsai out of it’s pot and inspect the roots to see if the plant needs potting on. Even if replanting into the same pot, tease out the old compost and trim roots before adding fresh potting mix.

How do i keep my bonsai looking great?

Don’t let them go hungry

  • Packed full of all the essential nutrients your orchids need to thrive, feeding with Westland Bonsai Feed is the secret to lush, healthy orchids!
  • Feed every second watering in the active growing season (spring/summer) and every fourth watering in the winter

Are they thirsty?

Don’t let your plants get stressed! Under or over watering your plants can often lead to pest and disease problems.

Top tip – use a Westland Houseplant Watering Indicator so you know exactly when to water, they change colour when your plant needs a drink.

Tips for Better Results

  • Keep plants out of draughts and away from intense heat. Spraying with water at room temperature twice a week and sponging the leaves occasionally to remove dust is also recommended
  • Nip branches back when they begin to grow otherwise pruning cuts will show up in wood and will be noticeable.

General Advice

  • Don’t use me with ericaceous plants
  • Before use, rework potting mix between hands to reconstitute
  • Use in a well ventilated place and avoid breathing in dust
  • Wearing gloves is a good idea, and don’t forget to wash your hands afterwards!
  • Store in a dry, frost free place away from weed killers and other garden chemicals
  • Reseal bag after use
