Compost and Growing Media

Growing media – or garden compost to you and me – is one of the most frequently used items in any garden.

Make the correct choice and your plant, vegetable or shrub will simply flourish. Getting it wrong spells disaster. But it isn’t a complicated choice with Westland.

Whether you are sowing seeds, potting-on seedlings, taking cuttings, planting out a container or growing spuds – there is a Westland compost specifically formulated to meet your needs. The packaging clearly identifies what it is used for.

If your plant is acid loving, a cactus or even a bonsai tree, there is a Westland compost to meet your plants’ very specific needs.

There is also a range of loam based John Innes and multi-purpose composts. These careful formulations will enable seeds to germinate easily or strong roots to develop. Balanced nutrients, perfectly suited to the task, will feed the plant for up to three to five weeks, depending on the compost chosen. All you have to do is provide the right conditions and keep the compost properly watered and weed free.

Peat is an essential component for compost, however, Westland recognises that gardeners have different requirements and needs. They offer a 100% peat free range and also lead the UK market in peat reduction with the development of West+.

By mixing 50% West+ with 50% peat Westland has provided the perfect growing conditions, resulting in strong roots and flowers and overall plant health whilst, at the same time, reducing the use of peat.

West+ itself is an additive made from a fibrous material, sourced locally from trees grown in sustainable forests in accordance with Forest Stewardship Council guidelines.

Extensive independent growing trials, comparing different composts, have proven that the West+ range produces the best root and flower development.
