How to create a thick lawn

There’s nothing better than relaxing on thick, green grass in the sun. But what if the harsh and unpredictable British winter has left your lawn looking limp, patchy and dull? By adding new grass seed or lawn thickener, your lawn will grow strong, healthy and thick and is less likely to have weeds.

Revive your lawn with the ultimate lawn thickener

Westland’s Lawn Revive is a one stop solution for a thick, greener and lusher lawn.

Not only does it have the highest seed content in the market (making it the ultimate lawn thickener), but it enhances the soil and feeds every blade too. Lawn Revive will bring tired lawns back to life, fills patches and delivers all the essential nutrients your lawn needs to thrive. It is also completely natural and safe to use around children and pets. What more could you want?

How to use

  • Apply every 3-4 weeks from February to September when the grass is actively growing
  • For best results apply to the lawn after moving and remove the clippings for better seed-soil contact. Ideal for use after scarification. See our Kent & Stowe Lawn Scarifying Rake
  • Do not apply when soil is dry, during freezing conditions or when frost is expected
  • Turn the bag over a few times or shake the box before to mix the contents

Lawn Maintenance

For general lawn maintenance apply at a rate of 35g/m2.

Tired & Sparse Lawns

For 3 day greening and lawns in need of repair or early in spring & autumn, the rate can be increased to 50g/m2 to add more grass seed and aid recovery.

By Hand

Mark out the area to be treated into 1m2 sections and apply evenly over the surface. One handful is approximately 35g.

By Spreader

For larger lawns we recommend using a spreader. Use the correct spreader setting or calibrate your spreader to apply the correct amount.

Using Lawn Seed to get a thick lawn

Westland also has a wide range of lawn seed which you can also use to achieve a thick lawn. The Gro-Sure range of lawn seed covers everything from fast acting seeds to hardwearing, through to shady lawns as well as fine and luxurious. Plus, our seeds have a bird deterrent coating to maximise your success. For best results sow in grass seed in spring from March to May, or in early autumn from mid-September to mid-October depending on weather conditions.

Read our guide on how to thicken your lawn below using Gro-Sure Smart Seed, or watch the video.

Step One

Remove weeds and debris

Remove any weeds, making sure you pull out all the roots. You can use a corkscrew weeder which is ideal for use on lawns. If you use a weedkiller, such as Resolva Lawn Weedkiller, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions to know how much time to wait before sowing. Also remove any debris, such as stones or branches from the lawn.

Step Two

Mow lawn closely and rake

Mow the lawn closely, at 1 notch lower level on your mower than normal, making sure you cover the whole area to be sown. To have the best possible soil to seed contact, rake the surface of your lawn to remove any dead grass, moss or lawn clippings.

Step Three

Aerate your lawn

If the ground appears hard or compacted, use a lawn aerator. This will help water, air and nutrients penetrate to have improved root development, resulting in a thicker lawn. Spread Westland Lawn Seeding Soil to fill any shallow holes and to level-out the surface. This will also give the seed the best possible start.

Step Four

Sowing your lawn seed

Now the area is ready to sow. Shake the box to mix up the seeds. When sowing the aim is to achieve an even coverage. For this, sprinkle Gro-Sure lawn seed in 2 passes at right angles to each other, paying special attention to the borders. Check the packaging instructions for the recommended rate of application.

Once this process is finished, lightly rake the surface to incorporate the seed into the soil. Water thoroughly to start off germination. Use a fine-spray watering can or sprinkler, taking care not to wash the seeds away or create puddles.

Step Five

Taking care of your new lawn

Water daily until established, usually this period lasts for 1-2 weeks. In very hot conditions water late in the day once the sun has gone down. It is better to water thoroughly once, rather than several times lightly. Mow for the first time with the highest setting when the grass is 5-8cm long. Make sure the grass is dry.
